Welcome

00:00:43:10 - 00:00:48:03
We are back for the second half of our
interview with Midlife Whisperer Dr.
00:00:48:03 - 00:00:49:19
Ellen Albertson.
00:00:49:19 - 00:00:51:00
Ellen gave us some background
00:00:51:00 - 00:00:54:09
about her inspiration
to become the midlife Whisperer,
00:00:54:15 - 00:00:58:03
and shared her insights on
how to rock your midlife.
00:00:58:03 - 00:01:00:19
We cannot wait to learn more!
00:01:00:19 - 00:01:02:23
Welcome back, Dr. Ellen.
00:01:02:23 - 00:01:04:22
Thank you. Good to be here again.
00:01:04:22 - 00:01:06:06
Yes. Welcome back.
00:01:06:06 - 00:01:07:18
Really excited to talk to you.
00:01:07:18 - 00:01:11:12
Last time we spoke,
we didn't quite get to a topic that she,
00:01:11:12 - 00:01:13:23
Supatra, and I
were both really hoping to ask you about.
00:01:13:23 - 00:01:15:19
So I'm going to ask you now.
00:01:15:19 - 00:01:18:19
Yes, you are a Reiki master
00:01:18:20 - 00:01:23:08
and you also practice mindfulness
and teach self-compassion at mindfulness.
00:01:23:19 - 00:01:26:18
So how is it that you and corporate
00:01:26:18 - 00:01:30:00
all of that
to help women transform their midlife
00:01:31:00 - 00:01:31:14
as well?
00:01:31:14 - 00:01:34:16
Reiki is just divine universal
lifeforce energy.
00:01:34:16 - 00:01:35:13
So Reiki refers
00:01:35:13 - 00:01:39:12
both to the energy of Reiki itself,
which again is this energy of everything.
00:01:39:12 - 00:01:40:08
And I like to think of it
00:01:40:08 - 00:01:43:11
kind of as the energy of love,
this really high vibrational energy.
00:01:43:17 - 00:01:45:08
And it's actually also a practice.
00:01:45:08 - 00:01:49:05
It's a practice that can be used
primarily was is for self-care,
00:01:49:05 - 00:01:50:22
especially when there's
various levels of it,
00:01:50:22 - 00:01:54:18
but for self-care and also to heal others
and pets and plants.
00:01:54:18 - 00:01:58:03
And I just, you know,
it really keeps you grounded
00:01:58:03 - 00:02:01:11
and connected with that universal
lifeforce energy.
00:02:01:11 - 00:02:05:19
I became a Reiki master pretty much,
I think, around when I became a dietitian.
00:02:05:19 - 00:02:09:18
So it's been part of my DNA
for three decades,
00:02:09:18 - 00:02:14:02
and I find that
it's just this ever present resource
00:02:14:02 - 00:02:18:15
that I can pull on to raise my vibration,
to help other people,
00:02:18:18 - 00:02:23:14
to send out energy, for the planet
or for anybody that's in distress.
00:02:23:14 - 00:02:28:02
And the cool thing about Reiki
is that the energy doesn't come from me.
00:02:28:02 - 00:02:29:21
It comes through me.
00:02:29:21 - 00:02:35:09
So whether I'm putting my hands on myself
or my dog, my partner or a client or even
00:02:35:14 - 00:02:37:12
you can heal people at a distance,
00:02:37:12 - 00:02:40:05
they're actually I don't
I think about facilitating healing.
00:02:40:05 - 00:02:45:18
What's happening is the recipient
is pulling the Reiki energy in through me.
00:02:45:18 - 00:02:48:18
So I'm like a giant straw or a funnel.
00:02:48:18 - 00:02:53:04
And I love that because it doesn't
drain me like a lot of other energy work.
00:02:53:13 - 00:02:56:01
It comes from the practitioner,
so it drains you.
00:02:56:01 - 00:02:57:08
When I do Reiki,
00:02:57:08 - 00:03:01:05
I just feel, you know, like Reiki high
because it's coming through me.
00:03:01:08 - 00:03:04:12
My clients are feeling better or I'm
feeling better if I'm doing it on myself
00:03:04:12 - 00:03:08:19
and it's just always present and it's cool
because it also works through intention.
00:03:09:00 - 00:03:12:00
So when you lay your hands on someone
and you've been,
00:03:12:04 - 00:03:15:04
you've done what's called a
there's a blessing ceremony, which is,
00:03:15:10 - 00:03:19:02
these are these attunements that you receive
at the various levels of Reiki.
00:03:19:08 - 00:03:22:23
What ends up happening is
if my intention is for the highest good of
00:03:22:23 - 00:03:25:14
the recipients,
whether it's me or a client or,
00:03:25:14 - 00:03:27:11
you know, someone,
I'm sending it at a distance.
00:03:28:11 - 00:03:29:19
their and their intention
00:03:29:19 - 00:03:32:21
is to receive that healing
that's going to amplify the results.
00:03:32:21 - 00:03:33:21
So I just think about it.
00:03:33:21 - 00:03:36:20
It's like amplifying all of this
good energy.
00:03:36:20 - 00:03:40:08
The Lord knows all of us really need
and the planet really needs.
00:03:40:08 - 00:03:44:00
So it's kind of Reiki in a nutshell,
but it's it also it just no harm.
00:03:44:00 - 00:03:46:22
It's simple to learn like a five year
old could get the attachments and do it.
00:03:46:22 - 00:03:49:08
And sometimes kids
and I've taught it to children,
00:03:49:08 - 00:03:51:15
they get it so quick
they're like, oh, I get it.
00:03:51:15 - 00:03:53:11
I feel this, this makes total sense to me.
00:03:53:11 - 00:03:57:15
I think as adults so often
we're like getting to intellectual about
00:03:57:15 - 00:04:00:15
what's going on and we just don't receive,
00:04:01:05 - 00:04:04:05
all that's possible for us. Yes.
00:04:04:09 - 00:04:06:19
Can you go into the attunement?
00:04:06:19 - 00:04:09:11
What does that actually look like? That I really want to know.
00:04:09:11 - 00:04:10:07
So yeah.
00:04:10:07 - 00:04:13:17
So there is
it depends on who was teaching.
00:04:13:17 - 00:04:15:15
So Reiki is a little bit
like telephone tag.
00:04:15:15 - 00:04:20:22
There were, you know, there was Yasui and
and he taught to te taught,
00:04:21:07 - 00:04:22:10
someone who was she?
00:04:22:10 - 00:04:26:14
And he, she, he taught Takada
and then 21 masters came from Takada.
00:04:26:22 - 00:04:29:21
she was a Japanese descent,
Hawaiian woman.
00:04:29:21 - 00:04:31:14
And so it's a little bit
like telephone tag.
00:04:31:14 - 00:04:33:13
Depending on what master you learn from,
on what you're
00:04:33:13 - 00:04:35:07
lineages is
it's always a little bit different.
00:04:35:07 - 00:04:39:21
But there are, attunement is essentially a blessing, ceremony
00:04:39:21 - 00:04:44:22
where what you do is the master
gives you the attunement
00:04:44:23 - 00:04:45:21
so that what that does
00:04:45:21 - 00:04:49:22
is it rearranges your chakras so
that you're able to channel this energy.
00:04:49:22 - 00:04:52:00
You already have this lifeforce energy
within you.
00:04:52:00 - 00:04:53:20
It's almost like it's opening up a key.
00:04:53:20 - 00:04:57:07
Like, if you think about the, you know,
the lock and key with enzymes and things
00:04:57:07 - 00:05:00:21
like that, protein reactions, it's
kind of opening up and allowing this
00:05:00:21 - 00:05:04:20
Reiki energy to flow in through your heart
and out your hands.
00:05:04:20 - 00:05:08:17
So I do this very simple blessing ceremony
when I do it with Reiki one,
00:05:08:17 - 00:05:10:12
I do two different blessing ceremonies.
00:05:10:12 - 00:05:12:09
I do one let them work on themselves
00:05:12:09 - 00:05:14:00
a little bit,
and then they let them work on each other.
00:05:14:00 - 00:05:15:11
And this light bulb goes off
and they're like,
00:05:15:11 - 00:05:18:00
oh my gosh, this energy is really flowing.
00:05:18:00 - 00:05:20:23
and then in level two,
there's another, attunement.
00:05:20:23 - 00:05:24:24
And that allows you
and you also receive some, mantras
00:05:24:24 - 00:05:28:00
and some symbols and that allows you to do
Reiki at a distance.
00:05:28:00 - 00:05:30:21
So I can literally send
Reiki at a distance.
00:05:30:21 - 00:05:33:08
And people feel that I've sent it
to clients and they're like, oh my gosh,
00:05:33:08 - 00:05:36:23
I felt like you were at my bedside,
which is always really, really cool.
00:05:37:17 - 00:05:38:19
and then level three,
00:05:38:19 - 00:05:41:19
you get another attunement
and that puts you at the master level.
00:05:41:22 - 00:05:45:06
so each each level, it's
like you're turning up this volume and,
00:05:45:21 - 00:05:49:05
the more you practice it, just like
I talked in the last podcast episode
00:05:49:05 - 00:05:51:18
about self-compassion,
the more you practice it and the more you
00:05:51:18 - 00:05:53:19
you think about, like,
even as I'm talking about it,
00:05:53:19 - 00:05:57:09
I can feel my hands, like
getting more warm and thinking about it.
00:05:57:09 - 00:05:59:07
It really starts to also grow.
00:05:59:07 - 00:06:01:16
And again,
like self-compassion does no harm.
00:06:01:16 - 00:06:06:09
Like how many things out there
or modalities are so easy and do no harm.
00:06:06:09 - 00:06:09:06
So it's something every you know,
I think those of us who love Reiki,
00:06:09:06 - 00:06:09:24
we have this vision
00:06:09:24 - 00:06:13:21
like what if everybody on the planet
like did things like Reiki, like heart
00:06:13:21 - 00:06:17:04
math, like self-compassion —There’d be world peace!
00:06:18:01 - 00:06:18:07
Yeah.
00:06:18:07 - 00:06:21:10
You just can't when you, you know,
you just can't hurt other people
00:06:21:10 - 00:06:24:20
when and the planet when you're vibing
with such positive energy.
00:06:25:13 - 00:06:26:10
I love and.
00:06:26:10 - 00:06:29:10
I think I would just add to this
as we're talking all mid like women just,
00:06:29:14 - 00:06:32:07
you know, the Dalai
Lama said that the midlife
00:06:32:07 - 00:06:35:05
the woman is going to save the Western
woman is going to save the world.
00:06:35:05 - 00:06:37:10
And I think he's really talking
about midlife women. Right.
00:06:37:10 - 00:06:39:13
Because hopefully we've done our work.
00:06:39:13 - 00:06:40:24
We're comfortable in our skin.
00:06:40:24 - 00:06:41:23
We are passionate
00:06:41:23 - 00:06:45:22
about making a better world for ourselves
and our kids and our grandkids.
00:06:46:05 - 00:06:47:15
We know our skills.
00:06:47:15 - 00:06:51:06
We all have crazy talents and abilities,
and we're starting to hone in on like,
00:06:51:11 - 00:06:52:23
what can I do to make a difference?
00:06:52:23 - 00:06:56:17
And Ricky's just a really easy way
that you can touch people in your world
00:06:56:17 - 00:06:58:06
and on your planet.
00:06:58:06 - 00:07:02:20
Well, you definitely radiate that energy
and that vibration,
00:07:02:20 - 00:07:06:01
and we are just lucky to be in that energy
00:07:06:01 - 00:07:09:02
with you, your personal life.
00:07:09:07 - 00:07:11:06
I mean, I've seen it on Instagram.
00:07:11:06 - 00:07:14:06
You are on the Champlain
Islands of Vermont.
00:07:14:13 - 00:07:16:22
You live half a year in Costa Rica.
00:07:16:22 - 00:07:20:07
This beautiful doggy
and this wonderful husband.
00:07:20:17 - 00:07:23:22
How does your environment
and your lifestyle
00:07:23:22 - 00:07:27:00
influence
your work and your personal well-being?
00:07:28:05 - 00:07:29:20
Well,
I'm fortunate to live in an environment
00:07:29:20 - 00:07:32:19
which is so incredibly healthy.
00:07:32:19 - 00:07:35:05
it's just I live on ten acres in Vermont.
00:07:35:05 - 00:07:36:14
my man grows all our food.
00:07:36:14 - 00:07:39:21
I mean, he's he's a don't let him know,
but he's a garden-a-holic.
00:07:40:24 - 00:07:44:15
this year, he put in a third of, like,
we live half of the year in Costa Rica.
00:07:44:15 - 00:07:47:07
We don't need to grow as much food
because I used to,
00:07:47:07 - 00:07:51:02
you know, freeze it and cannot, like, we'd
make, you know, salsa and I'd make soups
00:07:51:02 - 00:07:52:17
and put it all up for the winter.
00:07:52:17 - 00:07:55:04
But he planted 32
blueberry bushes this year.
00:07:55:04 - 00:07:59:15
He put in 40 broccoli plants
and ten fruit trees because it's like,
00:08:00:01 - 00:08:01:08
I want an orchard.
00:08:01:08 - 00:08:04:08
So, it's just such a blast to like, it's
00:08:04:08 - 00:08:07:08
go in my backyard
and just sit there and munch on kale.
00:08:07:08 - 00:08:09:19
And now we have,
you know, Swiss chard and kale and bok
00:08:09:19 - 00:08:13:23
choy and cucumbers
and summer squash and, blueberries.
00:08:13:23 - 00:08:17:20
So it's so easy for me to be healthy
and eat a whole food
00:08:17:20 - 00:08:19:11
plant based diet
because you've got all this.
00:08:19:11 - 00:08:22:11
I mean, I'm literally feeding
the neighbors, feeding the food shelf.
00:08:22:12 - 00:08:27:06
We have all this incredible food that and
we feed the birds and the other animals.
00:08:27:06 - 00:08:29:04
And it's just it really feels so good.
00:08:29:04 - 00:08:31:09
But I will say in Costa Rica too. Costa
00:08:31:09 - 00:08:34:19
Rica is a little problematic plant wise
because they spray really heavily,
00:08:35:09 - 00:08:38:10
because it's hot and there's so many bugs,
and I didn't realize that about it.
00:08:38:10 - 00:08:42:06
But I was fortunate enough
to find a really good organic farmer
00:08:42:06 - 00:08:44:13
who delivers right to our home.
00:08:44:13 - 00:08:47:16
And of course, my man decided that
we needed to have a little garden, too.
00:08:47:16 - 00:08:49:14
So of. Course, of. Course.
00:08:49:14 - 00:08:52:20
So we have an avocado tree
now we've got all these papayas,
00:08:52:20 - 00:08:55:20
and he's going to put in,
you know, some herbs and spinach.
00:08:55:20 - 00:08:58:20
So but the interesting thing is that
00:08:58:20 - 00:09:02:20
because I did the work initially,
you know, in my life when I was
00:09:02:20 - 00:09:03:22
if you told me
00:09:03:22 - 00:09:05:03
when I was in my mid 50s
00:09:05:03 - 00:09:07:18
that my life would look like this,
I would say, sign me up.
00:09:07:18 - 00:09:11:10
I remember watching that great movie
with, Julia Roberts, Eat, Pray, Love.
00:09:11:21 - 00:09:12:03
Yeah.
00:09:12:03 - 00:09:16:13
You know, Liz Gilbert and that last scene
where, you know Javier, who
00:09:16:13 - 00:09:19:08
she's starting to have a relationship,
but they haven't done it yet, right?
00:09:19:08 - 00:09:23:07
He says, Liz,
it is time he turns up this romantic music
00:09:23:07 - 00:09:25:14
and he like, dances her into the bedroom.
00:09:25:14 - 00:09:29:02
And my marriage was, like,
not working like I wanted to rock my midlife.
00:09:29:02 - 00:09:30:16
And my ex wanted to sit
in the rocking chair
00:09:30:16 - 00:09:32:04
and watch the History Channel,
which is great,
00:09:32:04 - 00:09:33:11
but that's not what I wanted.
00:09:33:11 - 00:09:36:18
And it was the marriage was very,
there's a lot of tension
00:09:36:18 - 00:09:39:18
and conflict, but I was like, oh my God.
00:09:39:24 - 00:09:41:15
Like, I want that.
00:09:41:15 - 00:09:43:21
Like, where's my happy hour?
Where's that loving feeling?
00:09:43:21 - 00:09:45:02
Where did all of that go?
00:09:45:02 - 00:09:47:05
And I started during Covid.
00:09:47:05 - 00:09:50:07
I had left my my ex and during Covid
I was doing
00:09:50:07 - 00:09:54:01
this process called Destination Vibration
where I was visualizing
00:09:54:01 - 00:09:57:04
myself dancing,
which for me is really a metaphor for,
00:09:58:06 - 00:10:00:00
being high vibe, for feeling really good.
00:10:00:00 - 00:10:01:04
I've been a dancer my whole life.
00:10:01:04 - 00:10:03:18
You can see me
dance on Instagram on occasion.
00:10:03:18 - 00:10:07:20
but anyway, I, you know, Kenny
shows up in my life, this incredible man.
00:10:07:20 - 00:10:08:18
Our first date.
00:10:08:18 - 00:10:10:23
Like, I was vibing with this whole joy
and feelings
00:10:10:23 - 00:10:13:23
because I'm, like, lockdown during Covid.
00:10:14:04 - 00:10:18:06
And then I got out, and then I met Kenny
and he shows up for our first date
00:10:18:06 - 00:10:23:06
with two dozen roses, you know, dragging
this ginormous cooler filled with produce.
00:10:24:00 - 00:10:26:04
Oh, had, you know,
I had head of cauliflower.
00:10:26:04 - 00:10:28:23
He had grown and we made pesto
and we made zoodles.
00:10:28:23 - 00:10:32:03
And he brought squash blossoms,
which we cooked up with some goat cheese.
00:10:32:03 - 00:10:34:14
And and it was like, oh, my God.
00:10:34:14 - 00:10:37:20
I remember driving up to this place
and I live on the, you know, Champlain
00:10:37:20 - 00:10:40:22
Islands,
which is, just beautiful ten acre estate.
00:10:40:22 - 00:10:44:04
And the ttune of Gone With the Wind
is going through my head and I'm like,
00:10:44:11 - 00:10:47:11
universe, what the beep, right?
00:10:47:12 - 00:10:49:23
But you know, you're asking me
about health and well-being.
00:10:49:23 - 00:10:53:16
The thing is, if you do your work
and you're really authentic
00:10:53:16 - 00:10:57:07
and you love yourself
and you're on the right vibrational track,
00:10:57:07 - 00:10:59:08
you will attract the environment
that's best for you.
00:10:59:08 - 00:11:01:12
Like, I never in a million years
thought I would be happy out here.
00:11:01:12 - 00:11:04:12
I thought, you know,
I live my my son went to camp,
00:11:04:18 - 00:11:06:08
you know, a half a mile
from where I live now.
00:11:06:08 - 00:11:09:22
And I would come up to north here every
summer and I'd be like, it's the sticks.
00:11:09:22 - 00:11:11:13
There's nothing out here.
00:11:11:13 - 00:11:14:19
But I'm just always amazed
at how much I love it.
00:11:14:19 - 00:11:17:14
It's just every day is just just gorgeous.
00:11:17:14 - 00:11:18:24
And then of course, Costa Rica is great.
00:11:18:24 - 00:11:21:23
So to answer your question
a long way, it's just the place
00:11:21:23 - 00:11:25:07
that's really best for me vibrationally
and best for my health and well-being.
00:11:25:07 - 00:11:26:23
I don't have to work at being happy.
00:11:26:23 - 00:11:31:17
All I have to do is just be myself
and just enjoy my life, you know?
00:11:31:17 - 00:11:33:12
I think I just do the same.
00:11:33:12 - 00:11:35:15
Oh, sorry. It's real quick.
00:11:35:15 - 00:11:38:23
It sounds like you have all this access
to the outdoors.
00:11:38:23 - 00:11:43:17
And I think that that's probably a big
part of how it raises your vibration.
00:11:43:17 - 00:11:45:17
You're just forest bathing every day.
00:11:46:16 - 00:11:47:07
Pretty much.
00:11:47:07 - 00:11:47:14
Yeah.
00:11:47:14 - 00:11:51:09
I mean, I literally live, you know,
I live between I say surf and turf.
00:11:51:09 - 00:11:55:23
So we've got the lake on the,
the West side seeing the sunsets.
00:11:55:23 - 00:11:58:03
And then on the, on the east side
we have a dairy barn.
00:11:58:03 - 00:11:59:19
So we've kind of live both ways.
00:11:59:19 - 00:12:02:13
And, you know, there's a ton of,
I mean, deer are constantly.
00:12:02:13 - 00:12:04:24
They're not running around my property
so much except that border collie.
00:12:04:24 - 00:12:07:11
But, I see deer every day and rabbits.
00:12:07:11 - 00:12:12:04
And we actually somebody spotted a bobcat
and I've got minks living in the front.
00:12:12:12 - 00:12:15:15
We leave all of our front area
just, out to nature.
00:12:15:15 - 00:12:20:00
So we've got blackbirds and minks
and all kinds of critters. Wow.
00:12:20:23 - 00:12:24:15
You know, the thing
that really, resonates, not resonates.
00:12:24:15 - 00:12:25:20
What's the right word, Chantal?
00:12:25:20 - 00:12:29:21
Tell the thing that really, spoke to me
when you were talking about
00:12:29:21 - 00:12:31:11
that change in your life.
00:12:31:11 - 00:12:34:23
Is that when Kenny came into your life,
you said, yes,
00:12:35:14 - 00:12:39:04
I know
so many people whose lives have changed.
00:12:39:04 - 00:12:43:18
Whether it's divorce
or sudden death or career changes.
00:12:43:18 - 00:12:44:16
Whatever it is,
00:12:45:17 - 00:12:46:23
something happens.
00:12:46:23 - 00:12:51:13
And it looks to me and to the outside
world like it's a really good change.
00:12:52:02 - 00:12:54:00
And they don't take it that way.
00:12:54:00 - 00:12:56:15
You know,
they're miserable in their new lives
00:12:56:15 - 00:12:58:05
and you really embraced it.
00:12:58:05 - 00:13:00:11
And I think there's something to that.
00:13:00:11 - 00:13:03:12
You know,
I think people you have to be ready for
00:13:04:01 - 00:13:08:10
accepting what the universe is sending
you and really sort of embracing it.
00:13:08:10 - 00:13:09:24
And you've done that.
00:13:09:24 - 00:13:10:04
Yeah.
00:13:10:04 - 00:13:12:09
That goes back to what we talked
about on the first episode
00:13:12:09 - 00:13:15:01
of the self-compassion
piece of Loving Yourself.
00:13:15:01 - 00:13:16:23
And I think part of it
we have what's called,
00:13:16:23 - 00:13:18:24
there's a really great book
called The Big Leap.
00:13:18:24 - 00:13:23:04
We put a damper on our happiness
because we don't feel like we deserve it.
00:13:23:14 - 00:13:28:16
So every time something good is
going to happen, we put the kibosh on it.
00:13:28:16 - 00:13:32:12
We sabotage ourselves
because we don't feel worthy.
00:13:32:12 - 00:13:34:10
And I'm here to tell you you are worthy.
00:13:34:10 - 00:13:38:06
Just because you're a human being we're
worthy isn't about your accomplishments
00:13:38:06 - 00:13:41:10
or how good you are at X,
Y, and Z, or how skinny you are.
00:13:41:21 - 00:13:45:02
Being worthy
is just because you are a divine being,
00:13:45:02 - 00:13:47:24
and you deserve love and worthiness
and all the good things.
00:13:47:24 - 00:13:52:06
But I love what you said too, because with
Kenny, I said yes, but it's interesting.
00:13:52:06 - 00:13:55:06
I was, I was reading
a book called Love in 90 Days,
00:13:55:06 - 00:13:58:06
and I decided that this time
I was going to pick differently
00:13:58:08 - 00:14:01:01
because I did not have a good track record
with men at all.
00:14:01:01 - 00:14:05:02
It was like I would put, I would pick men,
and this is a big piece of that midlife,
00:14:05:11 - 00:14:10:05
transformation,
is really changing your thinking.
00:14:10:05 - 00:14:15:01
I mean, I, you know, in Hollywood teaches
us to pick our men by our libidos, right?
00:14:15:01 - 00:14:18:02
If he is hot and I feel turned on
and he's turned on by me,
00:14:18:02 - 00:14:22:01
well, he's the right one here to say
the sexual thing is not the way,
00:14:22:09 - 00:14:24:12
you know, to go to pick someone.
00:14:24:12 - 00:14:27:14
And I really like with Kenny,
we just became such good friends.
00:14:27:14 - 00:14:30:22
We actually didn't get intimate for a year
and a half for variety of reasons.
00:14:30:22 - 00:14:32:08
We both had healing to do,
00:14:32:08 - 00:14:34:23
and now that part of our life
is just like the icing on the cake.
00:14:34:23 - 00:14:38:10
But there's this basis of love
and appreciation
00:14:38:10 - 00:14:41:13
and friendship and just we just have
so much fun and adore each other.
00:14:41:13 - 00:14:43:08
But yes, I said yes. It was scary.
00:14:43:08 - 00:14:45:05
But I knew, you know,
when you're saying yes to things,
00:14:46:06 - 00:14:48:10
you know, there's
always you can always change your mind.
00:14:48:10 - 00:14:50:16
But like, what if you miss
that opportunity, right? Right.
00:14:50:16 - 00:14:52:16
It's these opportunities to just here.
00:14:52:16 - 00:14:55:08
And we miss those opportunities
because we don't feel worthy
00:14:55:08 - 00:14:59:02
or we feel afraid or we feel like,
oh my God, what if it's the wrong thing?
00:14:59:10 - 00:15:02:13
We can always, you know, change our minds
and we can always,
00:15:02:13 - 00:15:05:22
like, backpedal and,
but what if it's the best thing?
00:15:05:22 - 00:15:07:21
Like like I did, affirmation
00:15:07:21 - 00:15:11:06
the other day, and, like, your motto is,
what's the best thing that can happen?
00:15:11:22 - 00:15:15:17
I always say that to my clients
because they always go to the worst case.
00:15:15:17 - 00:15:17:16
And I say, okay, let's explore that.
00:15:17:16 - 00:15:19:02
But what's the best case?
00:15:19:02 - 00:15:21:24
And when they do that,
you see them light up.
00:15:21:24 - 00:15:23:04
You see them.
00:15:23:04 - 00:15:27:04
I also ask them,
do you think that that's possible?
00:15:27:21 - 00:15:34:06
And when they say yes, I'm like, why can't
we always go to the best case scenario?
00:15:34:06 - 00:15:38:11
What would change in our lives
if we chose the best case
00:15:38:11 - 00:15:39:21
over the worst case scenario?
00:15:39:21 - 00:15:42:23
I love that,
and you're a living example of that.
00:15:44:22 - 00:15:45:06
Yeah.
00:15:45:06 - 00:15:47:15
And also, the more you do that too,
the healthier you are
00:15:47:15 - 00:15:49:06
and the happier your life is and the more.
00:15:49:06 - 00:15:51:11
And I think that, again,
the more we expand,
00:15:51:11 - 00:15:53:18
the more we give other people permission
to do the same.
00:15:53:18 - 00:15:55:08
I think one of the cool things
that's happening,
00:15:55:08 - 00:15:57:01
we talked a little bit off line about,
00:15:57:01 - 00:15:59:18
you know, social media and Instagram
and all the things.
00:15:59:18 - 00:16:01:18
But, you know, women are supporting women.
00:16:01:18 - 00:16:04:23
And there's a really cool thing
happening in the midlife space where,
00:16:05:21 - 00:16:08:21
everybody is just cheering each other on.
00:16:09:03 - 00:16:09:09
Yeah.
00:16:09:09 - 00:16:10:15
It's a beautiful thing that we, you know,
00:16:10:15 - 00:16:14:14
when each of us shines our light, we're,
you know, you can you can be that flame.
00:16:14:21 - 00:16:18:07
You can pass the torch to somebody else
and you can shine a light on them,
00:16:18:12 - 00:16:20:12
help them up when they're struggling.
00:16:20:12 - 00:16:22:17
I think that's a lot of
I think all of our work. Right.
00:16:22:17 - 00:16:24:08
We are all teaching
00:16:24:08 - 00:16:27:08
what we've learned and teaching
what we have to learn on a deeper level.
00:16:28:02 - 00:16:28:14
For sure.
00:16:28:14 - 00:16:29:01
Yeah.
00:16:29:01 - 00:16:32:19
Now, speaking of teaching, you write
for a lot of really great publications.
00:16:33:03 - 00:16:36:02
I think self magazine, Better
00:16:36:02 - 00:16:39:03
Homes and Gardens and Good Housekeeping,
just to name a few.
00:16:39:15 - 00:16:42:12
Can you talk about some of the themes
that you're writing about that
00:16:42:12 - 00:16:46:09
midlife women are really craving
to hear more about and get educated on?
00:16:46:20 - 00:16:47:23
Yeah, well, these days, my,
00:16:47:23 - 00:16:50:14
my, the main places I'm writing for,
I write for Crunchy Tails.
00:16:50:14 - 00:16:52:20
So if you haven't checked out, it's
CrunchyTales.com
00:16:52:20 - 00:16:56:16
if you guys have seen it, but it's it's
a magazine specifically for women over 50.
00:16:56:22 - 00:17:00:12
So I write about everything
from menopause, rage.
00:17:00:12 - 00:17:02:06
So a lot of like menopausal issues.
00:17:02:06 - 00:17:04:05
What are the best foods for menopause?
00:17:04:05 - 00:17:07:14
I just did a really fun piece on what your
I love astrology.
00:17:07:14 - 00:17:10:20
So I was like, what your sign tells you
about your diet just for fun.
00:17:10:20 - 00:17:14:24
So I love writing those kind of fun
pieces, but I do a lot of writing for Ayer,
00:17:15:00 - 00:17:18:21
which is, a website
that sells supplements, supplements,
00:17:18:21 - 00:17:21:03
and food products
and all kinds of really cool things.
00:17:21:03 - 00:17:24:24
And, I write a lot about, again,
supplements, foods that are really good
00:17:24:24 - 00:17:26:13
for midlife, for menopausal women.
00:17:26:13 - 00:17:28:17
Like, right now
I'm writing a piece on bee pollen.
00:17:28:17 - 00:17:31:21
Like, who knew all the things that bee
pollen does?
00:17:32:04 - 00:17:33:10
It was amazing.
00:17:33:10 - 00:17:35:14
I was just like- what does bee pollen do?
00:17:35:14 - 00:17:38:13
Oh well, bee pollen actually
does everything for me.
00:17:38:13 - 00:17:42:07
It's a great antioxidant,
so it's anti-inflammatory.
00:17:42:12 - 00:17:44:15
so it helps with,
you know, cancer prevention.
00:17:44:15 - 00:17:47:16
It helps with,
you know, liver hepatic issues
00:17:47:22 - 00:17:49:12
actually may help you with menopause.
00:17:49:12 - 00:17:54:09
I found that it was helpful for women
who, had to be on, estrogen,
00:17:54:24 - 00:17:57:09
blockers because of breast cancer
and things like that.
00:17:57:09 - 00:18:00:18
So a really, really interesting I mean,
I think what's so interesting is that so
00:18:00:18 - 00:18:04:19
many of us, too, are looking for
natural ways to heal ourselves,
00:18:05:10 - 00:18:07:23
you know, really, you know,
there is a place for pharmaceuticals.
00:18:07:23 - 00:18:10:02
You know, I have Hashimoto's disease,
I have low thyroid.
00:18:10:02 - 00:18:12:24
I take synthroid,
which is, you know, I'm grateful for that.
00:18:12:24 - 00:18:17:00
But then so many things are diet,
lifestyle related,
00:18:17:00 - 00:18:20:06
and there are so many supplements
that in conjunction with a healthy diet
00:18:20:06 - 00:18:21:06
can really make a difference.
00:18:21:06 - 00:18:22:20
Like, you know,
if you're going through menopause,
00:18:22:20 - 00:18:24:24
super important
to be getting enough magnesium,
00:18:24:24 - 00:18:26:17
really important
to getting your omega three.
00:18:26:17 - 00:18:30:15
So I talk a lot about, you know,
supplementation around diet, lifestyle,
00:18:30:19 - 00:18:34:14
mental health, the, you know, diet,
mental health relationships and,
00:18:35:06 - 00:18:38:18
and just eat a lot of the things
in midlife women face, like work
00:18:38:18 - 00:18:42:00
life balance and dealing
with, you know, growing children and,
00:18:42:15 - 00:18:45:06
whatever my,
you know, followers need at the time,
00:18:46:13 - 00:18:46:23
right?
00:18:46:23 - 00:18:49:07
Absolutely.
00:18:49:07 - 00:18:53:10
you know, along those lines,
you've also appeared on Extra,
00:18:53:10 - 00:18:58:09
the Food Network, NBC World News,
tell us about these media appearances
00:18:58:09 - 00:19:01:09
and how they influenced your work
and your outreach.
00:19:02:06 - 00:19:05:20
Yeah, I think the media appearances,
you know, just made me understand
00:19:05:20 - 00:19:08:20
and make me understand
how powerful the media is
00:19:08:23 - 00:19:12:14
and how every opportunity
is an opportunity
00:19:12:14 - 00:19:15:14
to have more of an influence
and to make a shift in the world.
00:19:15:18 - 00:19:16:24
I must have a Leo Rising.
00:19:16:24 - 00:19:18:16
So I just love
being in front of the camera.
00:19:18:16 - 00:19:20:17
It's just it's just really, really fun.
00:19:20:17 - 00:19:22:02
And the cool thing about it
00:19:22:02 - 00:19:25:06
too, is that, you know,
media appearances, it's a snowball effect.
00:19:25:06 - 00:19:29:20
So the more I appear, the more you know
I can have an influence
00:19:29:20 - 00:19:32:04
on other people and help people
live happier and healthier lives.
00:19:32:04 - 00:19:35:10
And then media outlets, the other media
outlets, and you get more opportunities.
00:19:35:10 - 00:19:37:11
So, it's just fun.
00:19:37:11 - 00:19:38:04
It's interesting
00:19:38:04 - 00:19:43:04
because I've always been interested
in media, my, nutrition, my first degree.
00:19:43:04 - 00:19:44:24
I got a master's in nutrition
communication.
00:19:44:24 - 00:19:48:24
So that was back in the 90s
when the TV Food Network was forming,
00:19:48:24 - 00:19:51:22
and there were a lot of dietitians
who were interested
00:19:51:22 - 00:19:55:02
in the media and talking about food
and nutrition and health.
00:19:55:10 - 00:19:58:23
And then I went on, to do media
for a number of years with my ex-husband.
00:19:58:23 - 00:20:02:00
We were the cooking couple in the 90s,
and so we did tons
00:20:02:00 - 00:20:05:08
that we had a nationally syndicated
radio show even before the internet.
00:20:05:08 - 00:20:09:06
And then my PhD is actually in psychology
with an emphasis on media.
00:20:09:06 - 00:20:10:17
So it's media psychology.
00:20:10:17 - 00:20:13:14
So I think all of this work in the media
00:20:13:14 - 00:20:17:03
has really helped me to understand,
kind of on a,
00:20:17:19 - 00:20:20:07
on a macro level,
how powerful the media is.
00:20:20:07 - 00:20:21:14
And, you know, like with body image
00:20:21:14 - 00:20:25:08
looking and seeing, my gosh,
how much we get all of these subconscious,
00:20:26:13 - 00:20:28:05
media messages that influence
00:20:28:05 - 00:20:31:05
our body image,
how we feel about as women.
00:20:31:05 - 00:20:34:05
and how do I utilize the media
to change that?
00:20:34:05 - 00:20:37:05
And how do I, you know, use media
that I have a bigger reach to really
00:20:37:08 - 00:20:40:21
change the lives of individual women
and also change the conversation?
00:20:40:21 - 00:20:41:19
I think a lot of us like today,
00:20:41:19 - 00:20:45:23
I posted about like,
like who says you can't wear a bikini?
00:20:45:23 - 00:20:47:04
You know, at 50?
00:20:47:04 - 00:20:48:08
Like, where are they perceived?
00:20:48:08 - 00:20:50:00
Like,
I was reading New York Times, is it okay?
00:20:50:00 - 00:20:53:04
Like,
is it okay to wear a bikini after 50?
00:20:53:04 - 00:20:56:01
And I'm like,
why are we even having this conversation?
00:20:56:01 - 00:20:59:20
Like, why are we talking about health
and well-being and happiness?
00:20:59:21 - 00:21:01:20
Why do we have these conversations?
00:21:01:20 - 00:21:04:03
We are so frigging,
you know, focused on appearance.
00:21:04:03 - 00:21:06:06
So I want to look cute, like
like we all want to look cute.
00:21:06:06 - 00:21:07:21
There's nothing wrong with that.
00:21:07:21 - 00:21:10:00
But we focus so much attention
on appearance.
00:21:10:00 - 00:21:13:06
I think the media just really emphasizes
that and preys on women.
00:21:13:06 - 00:21:16:15
Like how often do you guys see B.S.
00:21:16:16 - 00:21:20:20
crap that people are wasting their money
on to, you know, combat
00:21:20:23 - 00:21:23:01
the weight and the menopause?
And it was this thing.
00:21:23:01 - 00:21:26:01
I saw this one the other day on gluteal.
00:21:26:13 - 00:21:29:19
I don't remember if something gluteal
something with your, your,
00:21:30:01 - 00:21:34:18
your ligaments in your, you muscles
in your butt which happened you know, with
00:21:34:18 - 00:21:37:24
midlife, menopause can actually amplify
a lot of these things.
00:21:37:24 - 00:21:41:16
But, you know, as a physical therapy,
like lift up the ligaments.
00:21:41:16 - 00:21:42:11
Oh, no.
00:21:42:11 - 00:21:44:10
That that they atrophy.
00:21:44:10 - 00:21:44:21
But, like,
00:21:44:21 - 00:21:47:21
because what women need to need to do
is eat the whole food plant
00:21:47:21 - 00:21:50:21
based diet and like,
do some exercises for your glutes,
00:21:50:24 - 00:21:55:05
do some squats
and to do some, you know, lunges.
00:21:56:02 - 00:21:56:13
you know.
00:21:56:13 - 00:22:00:08
You have a lot of people
trying to sell stuff, and they certainly
00:22:00:08 - 00:22:04:02
can sell a lot if they make women,
especially in their midlife,
00:22:04:02 - 00:22:07:23
feel insecure, inadequate,
not good enough.
00:22:08:04 - 00:22:13:00
That's where we see,
and I love that you use the media for good
00:22:13:11 - 00:22:17:16
to help expand people's awareness,
to help them become more self-compassionate.
00:22:18:06 - 00:22:21:06
And I think that that, you know,
if we can counter
00:22:21:12 - 00:22:26:13
the messaging that we're seeing and help
people be more discerning
00:22:26:16 - 00:22:27:13
about where
00:22:27:13 - 00:22:31:11
they're getting their information
or who they're following on social media,
00:22:32:07 - 00:22:38:01
we can change their mindset, we can
change how they feel about themselves.
00:22:38:01 - 00:22:40:20
We can help them become more self
compassionate.
00:22:40:20 - 00:22:44:09
That's what you're doing in the media
and that's beautiful.
00:22:44:18 - 00:22:45:06
Oh thank you.
00:22:45:06 - 00:22:49:14
And I think the thing is too,
that as we say,
00:22:49:14 - 00:22:53:23
you know, I want to be seen and heard
the media is catching up a little bit.
00:22:53:24 - 00:22:57:24
You know, you're seeing more older women
who are, you know,
00:22:57:24 - 00:23:02:13
doing the modeling because we want to
we want midlife women to sell us stuff.
00:23:02:13 - 00:23:04:21
I don't want some 20
something to sell me things.
00:23:04:21 - 00:23:05:07
I don't want to.
00:23:05:07 - 00:23:08:03
You know, I don't watch exercise videos,
but there are a lot of women, like,
00:23:08:03 - 00:23:10:16
they don't want to see a twentysomething
showing them what to do.
00:23:10:16 - 00:23:15:12
They want to see a 40, 50, 60 year old,
and I know I love one thing.
00:23:15:12 - 00:23:18:24
Another tip I would give midlife women to
is have friends of all ages.
00:23:18:24 - 00:23:22:09
Like I love my 30 year old friends,
like I got kids and I've got friends
00:23:22:09 - 00:23:25:15
with their friends and I've got an 85 year
old woman who's my Dr.
00:23:25:16 - 00:23:26:13
and across the street.
00:23:26:13 - 00:23:29:05
And we really need to combat this ageism.
00:23:29:05 - 00:23:31:22
I think it's an ism
that we don't talk enough about,
00:23:31:22 - 00:23:35:22
and we internalize the ageism
and we actually age better
00:23:36:03 - 00:23:39:18
when we have positive,
feelings about aging
00:23:39:23 - 00:23:41:13
and we surround ourselves
with role models.
00:23:41:13 - 00:23:42:24
I just think there's so many women
00:23:42:24 - 00:23:46:24
out there who are rocking their —
and men too rock in their 70s and 80s.
00:23:46:24 - 00:23:50:14
I mean, my parents are 92 and almost 94,
and they're amazing role models,
00:23:50:22 - 00:23:54:24
having this, you know, mentality that this
we get this whole second
00:23:54:24 - 00:23:58:16
adulthood that we're gifted with
and we can make make it amazing.
00:23:59:13 - 00:24:01:12
Preach, Dr. Ellen, preach.
00:24:03:06 - 00:24:05:01
Any good future
00:24:05:01 - 00:24:08:01
projects that we can look forward to
from you?
00:24:09:00 - 00:24:11:13
Well, I'm kind of starting to think
about some course creation,
00:24:11:13 - 00:24:14:21
and I don't know, with all my education,
I haven't taken a lot
00:24:14:21 - 00:24:17:21
of courses in how to create courses,
but I'm feeling like,
00:24:18:16 - 00:24:22:10
I want to want to really help
some people to really shift
00:24:22:10 - 00:24:26:06
the barometer, you know, and,
and sort of the one to the many model.
00:24:26:06 - 00:24:28:21
So I think that I kind of have a book
in the back of my mind.
00:24:28:21 - 00:24:30:18
I have this book
called The Second Saturn Return.
00:24:30:18 - 00:24:34:05
So we go through Saturn
takes 28.5 years to go around the sun.
00:24:34:11 - 00:24:35:14
So we go through our first one
00:24:35:14 - 00:24:39:12
kind of 28 to 30, and then we go through
another one like 58 to 60.
00:24:39:12 - 00:24:42:05
And that was a
very pivotal point in my life.
00:24:42:05 - 00:24:44:20
So I'm kind of thinking
about a book project, but also, you know,
00:24:44:20 - 00:24:45:19
and I just want to have fun.
00:24:46:20 - 00:24:47:13
Good idea.
00:24:47:13 - 00:24:48:07
Oh well you are
00:24:48:07 - 00:24:51:24
just having fun,
us what I think. You look at
00:24:51:24 - 00:24:54:17
work is fun as well?
00:24:54:17 - 00:24:57:13
I try to
I still there's a little part of me
00:24:57:13 - 00:25:00:17
that still wakes up in the morning,
and I'll be a true confession that I,
00:25:00:18 - 00:25:02:00
you know, I had clinical depression.
00:25:02:00 - 00:25:07:08
So in my 40s when I was going
through menopause and midlife
00:25:07:08 - 00:25:11:16
and difficult marriage and two kids,
I was diagnosed with clinical depression.
00:25:11:16 - 00:25:13:09
So I think I have
a little bit of the propensity.
00:25:13:09 - 00:25:16:14
So I have to really I have to work
on my mental health every single day.
00:25:16:14 - 00:25:18:19
And you say, yes, I get to do this,
I really do.
00:25:18:19 - 00:25:21:12
I do this because I love it
and I want to inspire people.
00:25:21:12 - 00:25:24:02
And it's again, it's a, it's a spiral.
00:25:24:02 - 00:25:28:11
The more I inspire people and help people,
the better I feel, the better they feel,
00:25:28:18 - 00:25:30:06
the more opportunities happen.
00:25:30:06 - 00:25:33:15
And I think just to going back
to your initial point, Chantal, is that,
00:25:34:05 - 00:25:36:18
you know, we get to decide
what our perspective on life
00:25:36:18 - 00:25:39:06
is going to be and decide, you know, what,
am I going to look at this
00:25:39:06 - 00:25:42:06
is is two ways to look at life
is, you know, everything is a miracle
00:25:42:09 - 00:25:44:19
and everything is groovy
or everything is not.
00:25:44:19 - 00:25:46:20
And the world's a tough place right now.
00:25:46:20 - 00:25:49:20
And I think that rather than focusing
on the problems, we need to focus
00:25:49:20 - 00:25:53:05
on, how do I raise my vibe, my energy,
and how do I make a difference?
00:25:53:05 - 00:25:55:20
And what's my role
in making a difference in the world?
00:25:56:20 - 00:25:57:05
You know,
00:25:57:05 - 00:26:00:09
you certainly
are making a difference in this world.
00:26:00:15 - 00:26:05:00
And we're so lucky to know you and to know
you're out there doing this work.
00:26:05:13 - 00:26:06:18
I can't even believe it.
00:26:06:18 - 00:26:11:07
But our time is up,
which is nuts, because we have 80 million
00:26:11:07 - 00:26:14:07
more questions for you,
and we really hope you come back
00:26:14:13 - 00:26:17:13
on this show again
so we can really pick your brain.
00:26:17:15 - 00:26:20:19
But for now,
we are definitely out of time.
